# Meta-Analysis

Learn how to set up a meta-analysis in Nested Knowledge.

A meta-analysis statistically pools results from multiple comparable studies into a single summary estimate. Choose a meta-analysis when you have several studies reporting the same outcome and want a combined effect size. It is typically built on top of a systematic literature review (SLR); see the [SLR guide](/guides/guidance-by-review-type/systematic-literature-review.md).

For general methodology guidance independent of the software, see [Meta-analysis best practices](/best-practices/best-practices-by-review-type/meta-analyses.md).

### Run A Meta-Analysis In Nested Knowledge

**Inputs:** an already built SLR to import and studies reporting comparable, poolable outcomes.

**Outputs:** a pooled estimate for each intervention and outcome, network meta-analysis comparisons with forest plots and heterogeneity statistics and a PRISMA flow diagram.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you're extracting quantitative data but don't need pooled statistical outputs, a [Table tag in Tagging](/review-workflow/tagging/configure-tagging.md#table) is a lighter-weight option than turning on MA Extraction. Smart MA Extraction is in beta, so manual MA Extraction is the recommended approach. Plan for it to take longer than tagging.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/guides/guidance-by-review-type/meta-analysis.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
