# Bibliomine

Import citations from a PDF reference list into your nest.

Use **Bibliomine** to import references from a PDF bibliography into your nest. Citation mining helps you identify studies cited by papers relevant to your research question. This tool retrieves references from bibliographies. It doesn't identify citations listed only in tables or supplementary files.

### Mine Citations

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open Bibliomine

On the nest menu, select **Other Sources**, then select **Bibliomine**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Upload A PDF

Upload a PDF that contains the reference list you want to import. **Bibliomine** creates individual records from recognized citations.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Choose A Processing Mode

Choose a processing mode before selecting **Bibliomine**. Use the default mode for standard reference lists.

Select **Cermine** when citations appear within the PDF body.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Review References

After processing, records have the **Require Review** status. Check titles, authors, PMIDs, DOIs, and links before sending records to **Screening**.

Select **View** to inspect each record's title, abstract, PMID, DOI, and link.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FU5VWmeVX4W1eVWMvnQG6%2Fbibliomine.png?alt=media&amp;token=2af71bb6-c64b-4f0b-aa89-3cbac63f3480" alt="The Bibliomine review list showing extracted references selected for review."><figcaption><p>Review extracted references before sending them to <strong>Screening</strong>.</p></figcaption></figure>

Remove incomplete or incorrectly recognized records. For example, remove a blank row or a record with an incomplete title.

Add a corrected record manually through [**Other Sources**](/review-workflow/literature-search/other-sources.md).

Records with a PMID or DOI import available bibliographic data.

**Bibliomine** uses information reported in the PDF. Check each record against the source before sending it to **Screening**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Send Records To Screening

After review, select **Send to Screening** in **Bibliomine**. The records enter [**Screening**](/review-workflow/screening.md).

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Send to Screening** can't be undone. Review selected records before continuing.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>Can Bibliomine import citations listed only in a table or supplement?</summary>

No. **Bibliomine** identifies references in the PDF bibliography. Add citations from tables or supplements manually through [**Other Sources**](/review-workflow/literature-search/other-sources.md).

It may not recognize nonstandard bibliography formats. Review extracted records before sending them to **Screening**.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I edit a citation before sending it to Screening?</summary>

Deselect incomplete records in **Bibliomine**. Add corrected records manually through [**Other Sources**](/review-workflow/literature-search/other-sources.md).

After records enter **Screening**, use [**Study Inspector**](/review-workflow/study-inspector.md) to change bibliographic details.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Which extraction mode should I use?</summary>

Use **Cermine** when citations appear within the PDF body. If the first mode misses expected citations, try the Smart mode and review the extracted records before sending them to **Screening**.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens to references without a PMID or DOI?</summary>

**Bibliomine** uses bibliographic data printed in the PDF instead of looking it up. You may need to correct titles, authors, or other fields during **Screening**. A Google Scholar link is provided where possible to help you find the original record.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/literature-search/other-sources/bibliomine.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
