# Advanced Study Inspector

Learn how to group filters together.

In the default, simplified view, every filter you add in Study Inspector combines with AND. For example filtering to Final Screening Status: Included as well as Tag: Mortality shows only studies that are both included and tagged Mortality.&#x20;

To combine filters with OR or NOT, use Advanced Study Inspector.

Advanced mode represents your filters as a Boolean query, the same concept used in [Search Exploration](/review-workflow/literature-search/ai-tools-in-search/search-exploration.md) query builder, that you restructure by dragging filters into and out of groups.

### Build An OR Group

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open Advanced Mode

In **Study Inspector**, select **Advanced**. Existing filters appear in the center, with their Boolean query on the right. Filters combine with AND by default.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Add A Group

Drag a group from the left side into the center to create an OR group.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Add Filters To The Group

Drag filters into the group. The query updates as you work, and the preview and result count reflects the broader OR match.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Negate A Group

To exclude a group's matches, select its **Negate** checkbox.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FvUGV3DTlN6HaJK6JETHs%2Fnegate%20group.png?alt=media&amp;token=5c0871cc-0b56-4e7e-aa3a-32a143ebbd8c" alt="A filter group in Study Inspector with the Negate checkbox selected."><figcaption><p>Negate excludes studies that match the group.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Negate A Filter

To negate one filter, select the circle beside it. This control also appears in **Simplified** mode.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Return To Simplified Mode

Select **Simplified**. Grouped filters carry over and show a grouped icon.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FawKmzONdocmdtYFCS0OV%2FOR%20group.png?alt=media&amp;token=06195b26-a66c-41a3-9145-6e3261ed167a" alt="Study Inspector in Simplified mode, showing grouped filters with a grouped icon."><figcaption><p>Grouped filters remain grouped in Simplified mode.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Implications

Groups built in Advanced mode persist when you switch back to Simplified mode; they're just not editable as a group from there. Return to Advanced mode to change how filters within a group are combined.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>What's the difference between negating a single filter and negating a whole group?</summary>

Negating a single filter excludes studies matching that one condition. Negating a group excludes studies matching the group's combined condition, which matters once filters inside the group are OR'd together.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I mix AND and OR in the same query?</summary>

Yes. Filters outside any group combine with AND by default; filters you drag into a group combine with OR. Nesting groups lets you build more complex combinations.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How do I get back to the standard filter view?</summary>

Select **Simplified** in the top left corner. Grouped filters stay grouped, shown with a grouped icon, but you'll need Advanced mode again to restructure them.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies/advanced-study-inspector.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
