# Filter Studies

Learn how to filter studies in Study Inspector.

Filters narrow the study list in **Study Inspector**. The filtered list controls which studies you view, edit, update with Bulk Actions, download, or explore.

**Bulk Actions** and **Download from Inspector** don't ask you to reconfirm matched studies. Check your filters before acting. For example, find studies excluded by a colleague or studies tagged in a specific region or records from a recent database update.

Filters cover bibliographic details, gathered data, workflow details, search details, and—when Allocation is enabled—study assignments. See [**Filters Available in Study Inspector**](/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies/filters-available-in-study-inspector.md) for each filter and examples.

### Add And Layer Filters

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Add A Filter

Select **Add Filter**, or type in the search box that says **Start Typing**. The field suggests some matching filters as you type.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Set The Value

Choose a filter, then set its value. After selection, some filters require you to select the plus icon to finalize.

{% hint style="info" %}
The number of matching records is shown in the bottom right. When no filters are added, this number displays all records in your nest.

Select Load All in the bottom right to display all matching records in the list.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Add Another Filter

Add filters to narrow the results. By default, multiple applied filters use AND. See below to [combine filters with OR.](#combine-filters-with-or)

For example, **Final Screening Status: Included** and **Title/Abstract: "randomized"** returns included studies with "randomized" in the title or abstract.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2F8GQ74X43mkm2PpvUz4n2%2FAND%20filters.png?alt=media&#x26;token=ef95926c-5dad-4797-90cf-85de58ff5b4c" alt="Study Inspector filter bar showing two filters combined with AND."><figcaption><p>Filters combine with AND by default.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Exclude Matching Studies

Select the circle beside a filter. The filter turns red and shows a minus sign. Results exclude studies that match it.

For example, negating **Tag: Semaglutide** returns all studies that do not have this tag applied.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FiEuiRkGPc1SdjR6rto3q%2Fexclude%20matching%20studies.png?alt=media&#x26;token=97a328b2-3707-48f5-a567-96c5a3cc8570" alt="Study Inspector filter bar with a negated filter marked by a red circle and minus sign."><figcaption><p>Negate a filter to exclude matching studies.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Match An Exact Tag

Tag filters include child tags by default. Select the star beside a tag filter to remove it and to match that tag only.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Clear All Filters

To remove every applied filter at once and return to the full record list, select **Clear All** at the end of the filter bar, rather than removing filters one at a time.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FIXR03Cf3XcqhjMT1z7y1%2FScreenshot%202026-10-09%20at%2014.43.43.png?alt=media&amp;token=36d6c2e6-585d-4dc5-ad3c-6e0120d53707" alt="Study Inspector filter bar with applied filters and the Clear All control at the end."><figcaption><p>Clear all applied filters from the filter bar.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Combine Filters With OR

The default view combines filters with AND. To use OR, or mix AND and OR, as well as NOT, use [**Advanced Study Inspector.**](/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies/advanced-study-inspector.md) For example, find studies that are included or tagged with mortality. **Advanced Study Inspector** represents filters as a Boolean query. Drag filters into or out of groups to restructure it.

### Customize Overview Columns

By default, Study Inspector displays Title, Author, Year and Final Screening Status as columns to view records at a glance. You may want to customize this to display study information of interest for rapid review. To add or remove columns select the three dots icon to the right of the column headers.

See [**Customize Columns**](#customize-overview-columns) for more detail.

### Save A Filter And Column Combination

Save filters and configured columns as a **Saved View**. This lets you return to the same setup later and is available for anyone to use in your nest.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Add Filters

Add the filters you'd like to save.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Open Saved Views

At the end of the filter bar, select **Saved Views**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Name The View

Enter a name for the current filters and columns.

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2Fbk08hIzqw4nuID1YLPGp%2Fsaved%20views.png?alt=media&#x26;token=b31c0bd2-f8c7-40cd-9ed1-888d1a9cbd62" alt="Saved Views dialog in Study Inspector with a field to name the current filters and columns."><figcaption><p>Name the filters and columns before saving the view.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save The View

Select **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

To return to it, select **Saved Views**, then select the saved view.

### What Filtering Changes

Filtering only changes your current display. It doesn't alter, exclude, or delete data.

Bulk Actions and Download from Inspector act on the current filter. An empty filter includes every study in the nest, including excluded studies. Filters don't change another reviewer's view.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>Can I combine filters with OR instead of AND?</summary>

Yes. Use [**Advanced Study Inspector**](/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies/advanced-study-inspector.md). The default view only supports AND.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does a tag filter also match a tag's child tags?</summary>

Yes, by default. Select the star beside the filter to match that tag only.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does filtering affect what other reviewers see?</summary>

No. Filtering only changes your current **Study Inspector** view. It doesn't alter study data or another reviewer's view.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Is a Saved View private or visible to everyone?</summary>

A Saved View is visible and usable to everyone who has access to the nest.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does Clear All remove a Saved View too?</summary>

No. **Clear All** only removes the filters currently applied to your view. A **Saved View** you've already saved isn't affected, and you can reopen it from **Saved Views** afterward.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
