# Download from Inspector

Learn how to download data on filtered study sets.

Use Download from Inspector to export study data from a single module for the filtered set of studies, displaying the customized columns. It is most commonly used to exports all studies, including studies that were excluded.&#x20;

First determine what you'd like to export:

| If you want to | Use |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A one-time export of bulk contents, all studies or a filtered subset, spanning metadata, screening, tags, extraction, appraisal, or comments | Download from Inspector (this page) |
| A one-time, formatted table export of **included** **studies** specifically, for a manuscript or report | [Exports](/review-workflow/exports.md) |
| A living formatted table export of **included studies** that stays in the nest and updates automatically as data changes | Table Cards in [Dashboard Editor](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/dashboard-editor.md) |
| Prompt an AI assistant to build a one-time table export of **included studies** | [Synthesis Chat](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/synthesis-chat.md) |

### How Download Works

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Filter The Study List

In **Study Inspector**, filter the records you want to export. An empty filter exports every record, including excluded studies. See [Filter studies.](/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies.md)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Configure Spreadsheet Columns

For spreadsheet exports, your configured **Study Inspector** columns appear first and in the same order. This is most necessary for downloading studies. Other types (screening decisions, tags, MA Extraction, Critical Appraisal, comments) have the appropriate columns already in the export. Configure columns before downloading. See [Customize Columns.](/review-workflow/study-inspector/customize-columns.md)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Choose Download Content

Select **Download**, then select the content you want to export.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Types Of Downloadable Content

#### Studies

Exports the filtered studies as a spreadsheet (.xlsx), a RIS file, or the full set of available full text PDFs, named by title, Ref ID, or author and year, your choice.

#### Screening Decisions

Exports every screening decision as a spreadsheet, including the screener's email and, for Single mode nests using Criteria-Based Screening, each criterion as its own column with its answer. Column structure depends on your screening mode:

* **Standard Single Screening** — final decision, then reviewer identity.
* **Standard Dual Screening** — each reviewer's decision and identity in turn (including any beyond the standard two, if a study was screened more than twice before adjudication), then the final decision and adjudicator identity.
* **Two-Pass Single Screening** — abstract decision and reviewer identity, then full text decision and reviewer identity.
* **Dual Two-Pass Screening** — the Dual Screening pattern, but abstract-level decisions and identities first, followed by full-text-level.

#### Tags

Exports every tag as a column, ordered as in your hierarchy, with every study as a row. Where a tag is applied, its text content fills the cell; if the tag has no content, its name fills the cell instead. If your nest has Table Content tags, toggle to export table contents instead of text contents: this includes every row from each table, with relevant study metadata attached, and two header rows, one for tag names and one for study-level and table columns.

#### Meta-Analytical Extracted Data

Exports every data element gathered during MA Extraction. Rows represent study arms, identified by intervention, rather than studies.

#### Critical Appraisal

Exports the answer to every Critical Appraisal question, either at the whole-study level or, if collected that way, at the level of each outcome.

#### Comments

Exports every comment made on a study, with the first comment and commenter's identity, followed by every subsequent comment in chronological order, each attributed to its author.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>What happens if I download without applying any filters?</summary>

You export every study in the nest, including excluded ones.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do configured Study Inspector columns affect my download?</summary>

Yes. Spreadsheet downloads use your current Inspector columns as the left-most columns, in the same order. Set up columns before downloading; see [Customize Columns.](/review-workflow/study-inspector/customize-columns.md)

</details>

<details>

<summary>Should I use this page or the Export page or the Dashboard or Synthesis Chat</summary>

It depends on what you want to export:

* **Use Inspector (this page)** for a one-time bulk export of all studies or a filtered subset. This export can include metadata, screening, tags, extraction, appraisal, and comments.
* **Use Exports** for a one-time formatted table of included studies, for a manuscript or report.
* **Use Table Cards in Dashboard Editor** for a formatted table of included studies that stays in the nest and updates automatically when the data changes.
* **Use Synthesis Chat** to prompt an AI assistant to build a one-time table of included studies.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I download full text PDFs in bulk?</summary>

Yes, as one of the three Studies export options, alongside .xlsx and RIS. Choose how you'd like the files named: title, Ref ID, or author and year.

</details>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/study-inspector/download-from-inspector.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
