# Dashboard Editor

Learn how to build a living Dashboard in your nest.

Use Dashboard Editor to build a customizable, living summary of your review. This includes a set of cards: text, tables, images, PRISMA diagrams, study spotlights, and tag visuals that can be exported. Dashboard sits alongside other Synthesis outputs, and automatically updates.

**Building this yourself?** You're in the right place.

**Looking at a finished Dashboard as a reader?** See [Dashboard in Synthesis](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/dashboard-in-synthesis.md) — it mirrors this page's layout exactly, minus the editing controls.

**Looking for a one-time download instead of a living output?** See [Exports](/review-workflow/exports.md) for tables, and [Download from Inspector](/review-workflow/study-inspector/download-from-inspector.md) for bulk study-level data.&#x20;

### Turning Dashboard On

Dashboard is enabled by default in a new nest. If it isn't showing in your Synthesis menu, go to **Nest Settings** and toggle it on. Once enabled, **Dashboard Editor** appears under the Synthesis menu in AutoLit.

### Building Your Dashboard

Navigate to Dashboard Editor and select the **+** icon to add your first Dashboard, optionally naming it. From there, choose from six card types:

| Card type                                     | Best for                                                                                                     |
| --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Text | Free-text commentary, using the same editor as Abstract Editor |
| Table | An updatable custom table (same builder as [Custom Table Export](/review-workflow/exports/custom-tables.md)) |
| PRISMA | Your PRISMA 2009 or 2020 diagram, kept in sync with Screening |
| Image | A static image with title and description |
| Study | Spotlighting one included study, fully interactive on expansion |
| Tag                                           | A sunburst, choropleth/map, or histogram built from a tag's contents                                         |
| Insight <i class="fa-sparkles">:sparkles:</i> | AI-generated, evidence-linked summaries of extracted data.                                                   |

Cards can be dragged, resized, and reordered; the arrangement you leave in Dashboard Editor is exactly what readers see on [Dashboard in Synthesis](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/dashboard-in-synthesis.md). You can also edit cards using the pencil icon and delete them using the trash icon.

Most cards can be downloaded individually once built — text cards as a Word document, table cards as `.csv`, image and PRISMA cards as `.jpg`. This per-card download is a convenient one-off grab, not a substitute for a systematic export; for that, use [Exports](/review-workflow/exports.md) or [Download from Inspector](/review-workflow/study-inspector/download-from-inspector.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
The choropleth/map is most compatible with the Core Smart Tag: **Study Location.**

The histogram is most compatible with the Core Smart Tag: **Study Size.**
{% endhint %}

### Build Tables in Dashboard

After building your tag hierarchy and beginning to extract data, it is useful to create your export table in Dashboard and watch it automatically populate when data is extracted. This helps to ensure data is being extracted in the way you want it to look in your export.

Select the Table Card and [**follow the Table Builder instructions.**](/review-workflow/exports/custom-tables.md#build-your-table) Your table(s) will sit in your Dashboard as living cards. Toggle on Wrap Text for better viewing of individual study rows.

Download anytime to export to excel.

### Generate Smart Insights from Dashboard

Dashboard is one of two places you can generate **Smart Insights** — AI-generated, evidence-linked summaries of your extracted data. From the Tag card menu, select **Insight**, then **Generate**, choosing either all identified tags or a specific selection. Generated Insights can be added individually or all at once as Dashboard cards, where they display as an expandable summary with linked claims and source evidence. See [Smart Insights](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/smart-insights.md) for the full walkthrough, including how this differs from generating a one-time Word document from the Export page.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>Will my Dashboard update automatically as I keep screening or tagging?</summary>

Yes — every card reflects the current state of the nest each time it's viewed. This is the core difference between Dashboard and a one-time export.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I control who sees my Dashboard?</summary>

Dashboard visibility follows your nest's overall Synthesis privacy setting (Public, Protected, or Private), configured in Nest Settings.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What if I want this table as a one-time download instead of a living card?</summary>

Use the same Table Builder from the [Exports](/review-workflow/exports.md) page instead — it's the identical builder, but the result is a downloadable file rather than a card on your Dashboard.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/dashboard-editor.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
