# Manuscript Editor

Learn how to create a manuscript.

Use Manuscript Editor to build a customizable living manuscript of your review. This requires manual input of your manuscript alongside updateable tables and can be exported as a word document.

**Building this yourself?** You're in the right place.

**Looking at a finished Manuscript as a reader?** See [Manuscript in Synthesis](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/manuscript-in-synthesis.md) — the same content in read-only form.

**Looking for AI assistance in writing a manuscript?** See [Synthesis Chat](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/synthesis-chat.md).

### Turning Manuscript On

Manuscript is not enabled by default in a new nest. If it isn't showing in your Synthesis menu, go to **Nest Settings** and toggle it on. Once enabled, **Manuscript Editor** appears under the Synthesis menu in AutoLit.

### Draft A Manuscript

Manuscript Editor works as a rich-text editor with tools for:

* **Headings** — used to auto-generate a Table of Contents (toggle on **Show Table of Contents**)
* **Bullet or numbered lists**
* **Images**
* **Updatable tables** — the same Table Builder used in [Custom Table Export](/review-workflow/exports/custom-tables.md) and Dashboard's Table card, but inserted directly into your prose and kept in sync as included studies and their data change; drag and drop column pills to reorder them
* **PRISMA diagram** — only the PRISMA 2020 version can be inserted here; PRISMA 2009 remains accessible on the dedicated [PRISMA Chart](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/prisma-chart.md) page and in Dashboard
* **Citations** — presented throughout in JAMA format

When you're done, export the whole document to Word by selecting the three dots icon in the top right and **Download.**

Automatically. The last save time is shown next to the undo/redo buttons in the top right.

</details>

Not currently. Use [Synthesis Chat](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs/synthesis-chat.md) to generates sections of your manuscript and manually copy and paste into the Manuscript editor to display on Synthesis.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/manuscript-editor.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
