# Import Tag Hierarchy Templates

Learn how to import a tag hierarchy template.

**Import Tag Hierarchy Templates** brings a vetted structure into your nest instead of building a hierarchy from a blank slate. Nested Knowledge offers organizational templates your own institution has configured, and public templates Nested Knowledge maintains for common frameworks.

### Organizational Templates

Before you import, confirm your organization has a template available: select the user icon, then **Organizations**, choose your institution, and check its **Tagging** section for existing templates.

Your nest also needs to be owned by that organization to import its templates. If it isn't, assign the organization as owner from **Nest Settings** and return to **Configure Tagging** <i class="fa-gear">:gear:</i>.

### Steps

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open Configure Tagging <i class="fa-gear">:gear:</i>

Ensure **Edit** mode is on.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### From Template

Select **Configure,** **Initialize From Template.**

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Choose Your Organization Template

<figure><img src="https://305208404-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fxb7uNGATUgwQAjDVQRXG%2Fuploads%2FVFH6oAhtDhlElPQldXAr%2Ftag%20template.png?alt=media&amp;token=77b5dad8-eda5-4982-80d3-92f7d3a18a9f" alt="The template selection dialog showing organization templates available to import."><figcaption><p>Choose an organization template to import into your nest.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Import

Import the whole hierarchy, or select specific root tags to bring in only what you need.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

See [Organizational Templates](/account-management/organization-management/organization-settings/organizational-templates.md) for how your organization builds and manages a template for its members to reuse.

### Public Templates

Public templates need no organizational affiliation and are available in every nest. Follow the same instructions as above and select **Public Templates** instead of your organization. Choose a template from foundational frameworks or critical appraisal tools.

Each public template lists its source, so you can cite it directly if your protocol calls for one. You can apply more than one template to the same nest.

| Project type | Recommended template | Why it fits |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Standard systematic review or evidence synthesis | **General PICO (AI-optimized)** | Captures Population, Intervention/Comparator, and Outcome plus basic study type — the default starting point for most reviews, and by far the most-used template. |
| Reproducing a trial protocol or registry record | **Review of Inclusion Criteria and Endpoints** | Structured around eligibility criteria and primary/secondary endpoints, matching how ClinicalTrials.gov records and published methods sections are organized. |
| EU medical device regulatory submission | **EUMDR** | Built from EU MDR guidelines. Use as a starting point — device class and project scope can change what's actually required. |
| NICE or other HTA submission | **NICE** | Structured on NICE guidelines for HEOR evidence synthesis. An approximation of required information, not a fixed checklist — expect to adjust it to your submission. |
| AMCP formulary dossier | **AMCP Template - Clinical Effectiveness & Safety** | Covers the full study-to-outcomes structure a formulary dossier needs in one hierarchy: study design and population details, treatment and dosing specifics, efficacy and safety outcomes with categorized adverse events, and supporting analyses (subgroups, effect size, statistical significance, limitations). |
| Real-world treatment pattern study | **Treatment Patterns** | Covers initiation, line of therapy, sequencing, switching, discontinuation, persistence, adherence, and duration. |
| Economic burden of illness study | **Economic Burden** | Covers direct medical and nonmedical costs, indirect costs, healthcare resource use, productivity loss, absenteeism, presenteeism, and caregiver burden. |

#### Critical Appraisal Templates

**On Critical Appraisal templates:** the Z-Critical Appraisal templates aren't in this table. **Critical Appraisal** already offers dedicated systems for most of them (GRADE, Cochrane RoB 2, ROBINS-I, QUADAS-2, and others), so that's the first place to look. Import one of these public templates as a tag hierarchy only as an alternative, when your checklist isn't yet offered directly in Critical Appraisal.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>My Organization template list is empty. How do I create and use a template?</summary>

If you have already created organization templates, it may be a case of access. First, check your organization owns your nest in [Nest Settings.](/your-nests/nest-settings.md)

If you haven't yet created organization templates, admins can do so in Organization Settings. See [Organizational Templates](/account-management/organization-management/organization-settings/organizational-templates.md) for instructions. Templates will be available to all users in the organization.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I import more than one template into the same nest?</summary>

Yes — there's no limit to how many templates you apply, whether organizational, public, or both.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens if I import a template that includes a tag with the same name as one I already have?</summary>

Nothing merges automatically — the imported tag is added as a duplicate alongside your existing one. Use the hierarchy's **Merge** tool afterward if you want to combine them.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I suggest a new public template?</summary>

Of course, we welcome it. Contact us at [support.](mailto:support@nested-knowledge.com)

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do I need my organization to own my nest to use public templates?</summary>

No — public templates are available in any nest; the ownership requirement applies only to organizational templates.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/tagging/configure-tagging/import-tag-hierarchy-templates.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
