# Create An Organization

Learn how to create an organization.

Create an organization to manage members, settings, and organization-owned nests. Any **AutoLit** user can create one and becomes its **Owner**.

### Before You Start

You'll need a **Nested Knowledge** account and must be signed in. Have these details ready:

* The organization's name and an optional short or abbreviated name.
* An optional email for the person alerted when a nest is made public.
* An optional homepage URL — for example, your institution's website.
* An optional logo.

### Create Your Organization

1. Sign in to Nested Knowledge.
2. Select the user menu.
3. Select **Organizations**.

4. Select **Add New**.
5. Enter your:

* **Organization Name** — the full name of your organization.
* **Secondary / Abbreviated Name** *(optional)* — a shorter name or acronym.
* **URL** *(optional)* — your organization's homepage.
* **Alert email** — the email alerted when an organization-owned nest is made public. We recommend the email of the organization's owner.

6. Add an optional **logo**.
7. Select **Create.**

You're now the **Owner**. The organization appears in **Organizations**, where you can manage it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Once you belong to an organization, new nests are owned by that organization rather than by you. Learn more about [Roles](/collaborate/member-management/roles.md) and [Permissions](/collaborate/member-management/permissions-and-inheritance.md).
{% endhint %}

### Next Steps

#### Invite Members To Your Organization

{% hint style="info" %}
The Organization must be set up with an active license or pilot in order to invite members. Only an Organization's Owner and Admins can invite members.
{% endhint %}

Next, [invite members](/collaborate/invite-your-team.md) and set their [roles](/collaborate/member-management/roles.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/account-management/organization-management/create-an-organization.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
