# Customize Columns

Learn how to customize columns in the Study Inspector view.

Customize Columns in Study Inspector to customize data you see in the filtered list at a glance as well as what columns are exported when you [**Download from Inspector.**](/review-workflow/study-inspector/download-from-inspector.md)

Title, Author, Publication Year, and Final Screening Status are default columns.

### Add, Reorder, And Display Columns

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Commonly Added Columns

Beyond the defaults, the columns reviewers reach for most often are **Full Text Status, Abstract Screening Status, Tags (**[**see content below**](#content)**)** and, if Criteria-based Screening is on, **Screening Criteria Count**.

### Every Available Column

<details>

<summary>Bibliographic and identifiers</summary>

Title, Author, Author List, Author Affiliation, Abstract, Publication Year, Publication Date, Journal, Volume, Issue, Pages, ISSN, Publication Type (where available), DOI, PubMed ID, Embase ID, External ID, NCT ID, Ref ID, Full Citation (JAMA format), Related Report Family (displayed by name or Ref ID), and Time of Retrieval (the date a record was imported into the nest).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Screening and module status</summary>

Final Screening Status, Tagging Status, Meta-Analytical Extraction Status, Critical Appraisal Status, Advancement/Inclusion Probability, and Screening Criteria Count.

If Dual mode is turned on: Your Screening Status, Screening Adjudicated By, and Reviewer Screened By.

If Dual Two Pass mode is turned on: Your Full Text Screening Status, Abstract Screening Status, Your Abstract Screening Status, FT Screening Adjudicated By, Reviewer FT Screened By, AB Screening Adjudicated By, and Reviewer AB Screened By.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Content</summary>

Applied Tags (a list of every tag applied to a study), Tags (choose a specific tag from your hierarchy, then whether to display its Tag Name, its Contents, or both), Comments, and Full Text Status (whether and how a full text was uploaded).

{% hint style="info" %}
**For tag columns specifically:** if you selected a parent tag, check that its star icon is filled in. A filled star displays the parent's child tags in the column; left unfilled, the column shows only the parent tag itself, which is often blank. This works similarly to filtering in Study Inspector, but here the star isn't filled in automatically — you need to select it yourself.
{% endhint %}

</details>

### Implications

Column choices carry directly into spreadsheet downloads, in the same left-to-right order shown in Study Inspector. Configure columns before you download, not after, if you want a specific export layout.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>Do the columns I choose affect what other reviewers see?</summary>

No — it only affects your Study Inspector view. Create a Saved View for other reviewers to access the same view. See [Filter Studies](/review-workflow/study-inspector/filter-studies.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I remove Title, Author, Publication Year, or Final Screening Status?</summary>

Yes. You can rearrange, remove and replace them.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Will every column I add show data for every study?</summary>

Only where it applies. A column tied to a mode or module you haven't turned on, for example, a Dual Screening column in a Single mode nest, or a Critical Appraisal Status column when appraisal is off, won't populate, and in most cases won't appear as an option at all.

</details>

<details>

<summary>I added a column and it's blank when I save?</summary>

This is usually one of two things:

* **The underlying data isn't there for that study** — for example, the tag you selected wasn't applied to it, or the bibliographic field you chose is missing from the record itself.
* **For tag columns specifically:** if you selected a parent tag, check that its star icon is filled in. A filled star displays the parent's child tags in the column; left unfilled, the column shows only the parent tag itself, which is often blank. This works similarly to filtering in Study Inspector, but here the star isn't filled in automatically — you need to select it yourself.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/study-inspector/customize-columns.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
