# Set up Synthesis Outputs

Learn how to set up Synthesis outputs.

Most **Synthesis** content needs no setup and is generated automatically when you tag, extract, screen, or appraise. See [Navigate Synthesis Outputs](/review-workflow/synthesis/navigate-synthesis-outputs.md).

The pages in this section cover outputs that need input: a Dashboard, a Manuscript, an Abstract, or a hand-picked Insight.

### Before You Start: What's Generated Automatically

All other outputs must be set up by hand before shown in Synthesis (see below).

Looking for a one-time download instead of a living output? See [Exports](/review-workflow/exports.md) — it covers files you generate and take elsewhere, rather than pages that stay current inside Synthesis.

### Choosing Your Output

**Dashboard Editor** and **Manuscript Editor** assemble the same underlying findings into a shareable output. Choose based on what your audience needs to do with it:

| If you want                                                                     | Use                                                                                           |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A dashboard of visual cards displaying summaries, defined tables, and insights. | [Dashboard Editor](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/dashboard-editor.md) |
| A connected written narrative, with citations                                   | [Manuscript Editor](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/manuscript-editor.md) |
| A short summary before exploring either of the above | [Abstract Editor](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/abstract-editor.md) |

### AI Tools That Pair With These

Rather than building from scratch, two AI tools generate a starting point directly from your nest's data:

* [**Smart Insights**](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/smart-insights.md) — evidence-linked narrative summaries, generated from Dashboard Editor as a living card, or from Exports as a one-time document.
* [**Smart Abstract**](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/abstract-editor/smart-abstract.md) — a structured Methods, Results, and Discussion abstract, generated from Abstract Editor.

The two work well together: **Smart Abstract** highlights what **Smart Insights** has surfaced. Generate Insights first for a fuller abstract. See [Smart Abstract](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/abstract-editor/smart-abstract.md) for details.

### Surfacing One Specific Finding

If you want to point directly at a single conclusion rather than build a whole output around it, see [Insights on Qualitative Synthesis](/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs/insights-on-qualitative-synthesis.md) — a title and short statement tied to a specific configuration of the sunburst diagram, so a reader sees your point and can immediately drill into the evidence behind it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nested-knowledge.com/review-workflow/synthesis/set-up-synthesis-outputs.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
